An Excerpt from the Book:
With thanks to the characters and wildlife that took a part in my adventure, and special thanks to Ziggy, The Gimp, and Mountain Goat Vern.
Thanks for dropping into my site - Hope you'll enjoy it.
In the early nineties, I did a five month solo thru-hike along the Pacific
Crest Trail in the States - after my feet cooled down, I wrote a book about it.
At the time, Kevin Costners movie, "Dances With Wolves" was around - Hmmm, I
thought....
"Dances With Marmots" would be a more fitting title for my experience - so that
was it.
The book never found a publisher, so I thought why not whack it up on a
website?!
There are pictures at the end of each chapter, and also links to pic's
throughout most of the chapters.
If you wish to see them all on one page, then there's the "Picture thumbnail
page".
There's also the, "Links to other stuff" where you'll find various sites and
small utilities that I've found interesting or useful, along with a few,
"outdoor" tips.
I've also added the FAQ's page, and a page on bear etiquette. (In the future, I
also hope to add a page on some hikes I've done here in NZ)
Sometime after my PCT hike, a friend introduced me to one of her colleagues
with, "Meet George, he walked from Mexico to Canada in five months!"
A puzzled look crossed his face as we shook hands, "You walked from Mexico to
Canada in 'Y' fronts?"
I still get a smile out of that.
Anyhow, if you're interested, hang around a while and dive in, you might get a
few more smiles along the way....
(Let me know if any of the links don't work - just drop a comment in the guest
book)
Happy trails!
Cheers, George Spearing, Oamaru, New Zealand.
